Tao, an 11-year-old Sumatran orangutan, escaped her enclosure through a volleyball-sized hole found in the woven mesh of the outdoor exhibit. She walked around a public area within the zoo, then went back to her enclosure on her own.

Pensacola, FL

A video taken at the Pensacola Interstate Fair shows a trainer in the cage with a female tiger, seemingly trying to corral the tiger before being pushed to the ground. Once the trainer is on the ground she tries to fend of the tiger with a small pole, before smacking the animal in the head repeatedly.

Another trainer unlocks and runs into the cage with a whip and begins hitting the tiger as she drags the female trainer by her legs into a corner. The trainer hits the tiger more than 20 times with the whip before she lets the female trainer go. The female trainer was taken to the hospital and treated for several scratches to her legs.

Maina, a 3-year-old red panda, died of unknown causes. She gave birth to two male cubs three months ago, who are now being hand-fed by zookeepers.

A pet tegu lizard named Dean was stolen from a backyard. The 4-foot lizard, which has sharp teeth, could be a danger to nearby people and domestic animals.

Cape Canaveral, FL

An emu named Taco escaped over his owner’s 4-foot fence and walked to a local bar. It took Brevard County Sheriff’s deputies and an animal control officer more than an hour to capture the 8-year-old bird. He also jumped the fence in October, 2012 and ran amok on State Road A1A.
