Ikela, a 15-year-old pregnant bonobo, bit off the tip of a zookeeper’s index finger at the San Diego Zoo. Another bonobo, Lana, retrieved the finger from the enclosure. The keeper was taken to a local hospital to have the finger reattached.

A man found a nearly 4-ft-long iguana dead on the banks of the Sacramento River across from Anderson River Park.

A “pet” wallaby escaped from his home and was found two weeks later in a neighbor’s yard. Wildlife officials were able to catch the animal with a tranquilizer. A zookeeper at the Denver Zoo died after a 6-year-old jaguar, Jorge, mauled her in the doorway of his exhibit. Jorge was fatally shot when he approached emergency workers who were treating the injured woman.
