Myrtle Beach, SC

Resident in the neighborhood of the Forestbrook area have been reporting sightings of a six-foot albino python. This snake is believed to be a former pet as albino pythons are not native to South Carolina.

Hernando, FL

17 alligators escaped from a farm by digging under a fence. Nine were later captured, but 8 still remain missing. The case is under investigation by Florida Fish and Wildlife officials and neighborhood residents are told to be on the lookout. The owner of the alligator farm has been cited for maintaining wildlife in an unsafe or unsanitary condition, a second degree misdemeanor.

A nearly 6-foot Burmese Python was found slithering around the back of a fast food restaurant in Cincinnati. It is suspected that the snake is a former pet and has been placed in temporary care with the SPCA.

A family’s 10-year old Pigtail Macaque was confiscated by officials from a family who didn’t possess a permit. The family is fighting to get the macaque back through court proceedings.

Lawrenceville, GA

The Yerkes National Primate Research Center is searching for a missing 2-year old female rhesus monkey. The primate was discovered missing a week ago. Center administrators have notified Emory’s Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, the National Center for Research Resources, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Gwninett County Police.

Update (7/6/2011): Officials from Yerkes Resarch Center now believe the monkey may be dead.

Update (7/8/2011): Residents filed a formal nuisance complaint against Yerkes.

Putnam Lake, NY

A woman died after apparently being bitten by her pet Black Mamba. The woman also had more than six dozen snakes, 56 of which were poisonous, including a cobra, which is illegal to possess without a permit. A state investigation is underway.

All 75 snakes are currently being housed at the Bronx Zoo.

A mountain lion was killed when hit by a SUV on a highway in Milford, Conneticut. With no native moutain lion population in the state, authorities suspect the animal had either escaped, or was released, from captivity.

An alligator bit a 7-year old boy at a theme park in Norhtwest Indiana after an unrelated visitor invited children around the exhibit to pet it. The child was treated at the scene then taken to a hospital.

Fremont, OH

A 6 year old grivet monkey escaped and was on the loose for about two hours. During the time he was loose, he scratched two young girls. The children did not need medical attention and the monkey was recaptured by his guardian. Police indicated that the guardian would receive a citation for allowing an animal to run through the city at large.

A 5-foot pet boa escaped from his handler while camping. The snake could not be found. The man was cited for violating park rules.
