How are U.S. Zoos Keeping Animals Safe?

In the past month, there has been a surge of violence and injury to animals in zoos, including a flamingo who was stoned to death in a Czech zoo and El Salvador’s beloved hippo named Gustavito, who was violently attacked and killed. In the U.S., the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) requires a comprehensive, eight-month accreditation process for its member facilities, but even so, Born Free USA has reported 146 “animal incidents” at AZA-accredited facilities in the U.S. in the last year alone.
