S. 553/A.4573: Licensing and Protection of Canned Hunting Facilities [2017]

in New York on January 19, 2017

Bill Description:
This bill makes canned hunting facilities explicitly legal. The holder of a hunting ranch facility license may purchase, possess, breed, rear, and shoot any hoofed animals, and may charge a fee for others to do so.[teaserbreak]

Background:
The existing canned hunt law in New York (Environmental Conservation Law, section 11-1904) bans canned hunting in enclosed areas of ten acres or less, despite the fact that most canned hunting facilities are much larger than ten acres. Eight years ago, former New York Governor George Pataki vetoed a bill that would have banned all canned hunting in New York. S. 553 would protect all canned hunting facilities that are currently legal from any future attempt to pass a ban on this barbaric practice.
