India settles into her new life

in Blog on August 13, 2008

India, the newly arrived pig-tailed macaque, has settled in well. She had a busy week getting to know the individuals from the social group in the adjoining enclosure, all former “pets.” They were very welcoming to her, and within just a few days she was grooming and being groomed through the dividing panel. The contact was so positive that we decided to move forward with her socialization into this group.

Introductions can be stressful times for the monkeys so, with this in mind, we gradually introduced her to three individuals from the group rather than everyone at once. It was fascinating and extremely rewarding to watch as the three monkeys, Gilbert, Teddy, and Zach, all initiated friendly and playful contact with India. Gilbert was very excited by the whole event and, within a short period of time, he was enjoying an intense grooming session with India. India is now living with the three in their enclosure. She is spending her time exploring the enclosure, eating grass and grooming and playing with the three boys as well as other monkeys in the adjoining enclosures. We hope it won’t be too long before she can be introduced to the other members of the group.

What a difference to her life. After years of living on her own, she can at last enjoy the companionship, stimulation and emotional support of others of her kind.

Until next week,

Sarah
