The Canadian Government Rarely Stands Up for Wildlife

The default position of the Canadian government tends to favor protecting business interests over social concerns, often making it very difficult to find information pertaining to animal use. A disproportionate percentage of provincial budgets is focused on “game” animals. Hunting (while in decline), trapping, and fishing all remain huge drains on provincial and federal budgets.

Though efforts to modernize animal welfare legislation at the federal level have continually been defeated, the good news is that a slowly-increasing number of politicians are supporting positive animal welfare and conservation legislation.

Culling Kills Wildlife

Culling is the selective slaughter of animal populations and the main challenge to Canadian wildlife is the continued drive to cull animals, particularly (but not exclusively) in Ontario. Born Free USA works to protect many species from these mass killings, which are largely based on misunderstandings about the species that result in human conflict with them and perceived “overpopulation.”
