Following a hard-fought two-year battle, California has become the first state to ban bobcat trapping for the fur trade in 2015. Born Free USA asked our supporters to urge the California Fish and Game Commission to support this ban. The original text of a bill introduced in 2013, A.B. 1213, would have banned bobcat trapping throughout the state of California, but it was amended and weakened at the last minute by pro-trapping interests, and the final law only prohibited bobcat trapping around certain wildlife areas in California. On August 4-5, the Commission considered a proposal with two options for implementation of this law: 1) to ban bobcat trapping in certain areas only (the amended version) or 2) to ban bobcat trapping in all of California. Thankfully, the Commissioners made the compassionate choice and voted for option 2. Note: since this time, according to our 2017 Trapping Report analysis, 10 states now prohibit bobcat trapping. They are: AK, CA, CT, DE, IN, MD, NH, NJ, OH, and RI.
