One ton of illegal ivory—worth over $8 million—was crushed in Central Park last week. Ivory crushes and burning events like this are meant to send a powerful message that ivory is not a commodity to be traded and that it only has value to the living elephants it rightfully belongs to. Destroying confiscated ivory also prevents it from ever circulating back into the market.
