Bill Description:
This bill would make it illegal to import, export, ship, receive, possess, process, sell, offer for sale, or transport many at-risk species, including the “big five” African species (African elephants, lions, leopards, black rhinos, white rhinos, and Cape buffalo), at any airport or port facility owned or operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.[teaserbreak]
Background:
This bill is intended to curb trophy hunting. All of the “big five” species are currently facing severe threats from illegal poaching and sport hunting. You can read more about the elephant poaching crisis here.
A report from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said New York is the port of entry for much of the illegal animal trade into the country.
