Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus (of parent company Feld Entertainment) has announced that it will retire its circus elephants by May 2016. Adam M. Roberts, CEO of Born Free USA and Born Free Foundation, said Feld’s decision marked the beginning of the end for elephants performing at the circus. “I think the writing is on the wall for this practice,” he said. “The biggest player in the industry is out of the elephant business and the trend surely will be for the industry to slowly dry up.”
