H.B. 5386: Lion Meat Act [2014]

in Illinois on February 14, 2014

Update (March, 2014): This bill failed to make it out of the Agriculture and Conservation Committee before the deadline, so it is dead. We will continue working to add it as an amendment to another bill, or have it reintroduced in 2015.

Bill Description:
This bill, sponsored by Born Free USA, creates the Lion Meat Act. It provides that it is unlawful for any person to slaughter a lion or for any person to possess, breed, import or export from this state, buy or sell lions for the purpose of slaughter. It provides that it is unlawful to commercialize lion meat. It authorizes the Department of Agriculture to adopt and enforce any rules necessary to carry out the provisions of the act. And it provides that whoever violates any provision of the act shall be guilty of a Class A misdemeanor. Upon passage the bill would take effect immediately.
