Well, we certainly received plenty of rain this week. What a refreshing respite to the weeks of dry and hot weather. Green shoots of vegetation are now springing up all over the Sanctuary and the monkeys are enjoying eating it and foraging. Certain individuals, like Boon, will pull out clumps of grass and put them straight into their mouths. Others, like the bonnet macaques, will delicately pick away at the root clump before peeling back the outer layer and eating the root.

When you see how much the monkeys enjoy the vegetation and digging through the soil and realize what an important part it plays in their lives, you can fully appreciate how miserable it is for those monkeys who are kept in a barren and unnatural environment, living in metal cages or on concrete floors.
That is one of the reasons why I am so proud of our Sanctuary — the fact that we treat rescued monkeys as the wild animals they are and, although we cannot return them to their native habitat, we can at least provide them with a rich natural environment — something that many of them have never had in their lives.
