Fun in the sun and water

It’s getting near the time of year when the monkeys really start to enjoy water. As the days get warmer, the monkeys make the most of the pools in their enclosures — chasing each other, jumping in, splashing around, and swimming. The snow monkeys especially enjoy water and those who live in our 56-acre enclosure have two large ponds in which to play. They climb onto nearby tree branches and use them like diving boards jumping into the water.

It is emotionally rewarding to watch the progress of individual monkeys in the months following their arrival at the Sanctuary. This week Justin and Florence, two snow monkeys, have been particularly playful chasing each other around, playing “tag” and rough and tumble. Both are former “pets” and were denied a natural life with others of their kind. They have only been at the Sanctuary for a few months, but already have become an integral part of a social group and truly behaving like monkeys should.

Until next week,

Sarah
