A 259 Allows Cruel Killing Methods for Wildlife [2007]

in Nevada on November 24, 2007

Update: Good news! The language of this bill was modified and the aerial gunning provisions and spring loaded gun provisions were removed.

Bill Description: If passed, this legislation would implement an open season on mountain lions, with no restrictions on how, when, or how many mountain lions can be killed. This bill specifically allows for aerial hunting from airplanes or helicopters and the use of spring loaded guns. The bill also allows spring loaded guns to be used to kill coyotes.

Aerial gunning and spring-loaded traps are cruel and arbitrary methods of killing animals. They also represent a threat to public safety. Aerial gunning and spring guns do not target the offending animal; instead, they merely perpetuate a cycle of killing without addressing the underlying sources of the human-wildlife conflict. More cost-effective alternatives — ones that promote long-term solutions — should be pursued instead.
