SB 417 Bans the Future Use of Gestation Crates [2004]

in Maryland on April 12, 2004

Update: Unfortunately, this bill did not make through the entire legislative process this year and, therefore, it will need to be reintroduced next Session.

Bill Description: This bill, if passed, would ban gestation crates — which confine pregnant pigs to small stalls that do not allow the pigs to socialize with other pigs, turn around, or groom themselves. Gestation crates that currently are in use in Maryland would be phased out by 01/01/14.

This is common sense legislation, which prevents intolerable cruelty. Surely, requiring that pregnant pigs be given at least enough space to turn around is not too much to ask.
